How to Prescribe a Medication

Overview  

This article provides instructions on prescribing medications for clients.

You can prescribe a medication directly from the note created for the client. Once prescribed, the medication appears in the Medications box on the note. When you compile the note, the medication is also included in the compiled note. 

Important Notes

Warning
E-prescribing in ICANotes+ is available only within the United States. This feature is not supported for users accessing the system from outside the U.S.
Notes
Medications box: Displays only the medications prescribed or discontinued within that specific note.
Compiled note: Displays all active medications for the client, regardless of when they were prescribed.
Notes
Only the authorized users can prescribe the medications. 

Prescribe a Medication

The medication can be prescribed from any note. In this knowledge base article, the steps are provided for the progress note.

Step 1: Open the Medications section

  1. Navigate to the client’s chart.
  2. Open the progress note.
  3. Go to the Part 2 tab.
  4. Locate the Medications box.

Note: The Medications box is visible only to users with eRx access.

 

 

 

Step 2: Open the Medication List

  1. In the Medications box, click Enter.
  2. The Medication List tab opens and displays medications and allergies.

 

 

 

 


Step 3: Add a new medication

  1. Click Manage Medication(s).
  2. Choose one of the following options:

    • Type the medication name in the Prescribe New Drug field.
    • Click Prescribe New Drug and select a medication from categories.

Option 2 - Click Prescribe New Drug and select a medication from categories.

 

 

 

 

Step 4: Select dosage

  1. Select the medication from the list.
  2. Choose the appropriate dosage.

 

 

Step 5: Enter prescription details

  1. On the Prescription Preview screen, enter required details such as:
    • Quantity
    • Directions
    • Duration
    • Refills
    • Days supply
    • Pharmacy
  2. Click Send to Pharmacy.

 

 

Step 6: Review and send the prescription

  1. Review details on the Prescription Detail screen.
  2. Click Approve and Send.

Note: Click the info icons on this screen to view details about the respective field.

 

 

Step 7: Verify the medication

  • The prescribed medication appears in the Medications section of the note.
