Using Dragon to Dictate in ICANotes+

Using Dragon to Dictate in ICANotes+

Overview

We have tested and confirmed Dragon (Dragon Home 15) works very well right out of the box with ICANotes+.

Here are some points to consider if you are planning to use Dragon to dictate in ICANotes+:

  • Fields which involve numeric values (like NPIs and diagnosis codes) as well as email addresses can be tricky as Dragon dictates these in a way that does not appear as expected. We recommend users to type these into the field directly or use the pick list options when available (i.e. you can set up a Diagnosis Short List to choose from in the Diagnosis field).
  • Dragon dictates content quickly in ICANotes+ which we have found can occasionally result in the program duplicating or missing text as it tries to keep up. This is most notable in the Treatment Plan as well as the Complete Evaluation when navigating or dictating quickly. For example, you might have dictated a 5 line paragraph quickly and only the first 3.5 lines were registered while text on other tabs, if you were navigating quickly, may be duplicated, triplicated, etc. We are working to address this behavior but ask you to be aware of this caveat and review content as you go until then. We found that dictating at a modest pace resulted in no problems.

How to Use Dragon to Dictate

Start your Dragon software by starting the application. You may have opted to put a shortcut on your desktop or in a given folder.

The DragonBar (a collapsible toolbar) features on screen by default

When you're ready to dictate speech to text, simply click the red button and it will turn green, meaning that Dragon is listening for your voice.

The DragonBar will minimize once you move your mouse pointer away from it. Provided it still shows a green icon, it is still listening.

The example below shows a Progress Note. To dictate additional text after using some shrub content in the Behavior section, place your cursor where you want the text to go and begin speaking. That text will populate.

Click into other fields and continue dictation as needed.

You may resume using shrub content and interchange at any time.

Click the green button in the DragonBar to turn off microphone/speech recognition at any time.
