Entering Medications on the MAR
This knowledge base article is for inpatient facilities utilizing the MAR. Training is required before the MAR can be enabled for your account. For scheduling, please contact ICANotes.

Medications can be ordered from multiple notes, including the Complete Assessment, Prescriber Progress Note, and the Nursing Progress Note. Instructions for each follow below:

Complete Assessment

1. If you are seeing the patient for an admission, on the Finish Initial tab click the Medication Reconciliation button to apply any medications that the patient is currently taking.

If you need assistance with using the Medication Reconciliation, see our How To Use Medication Reconciliation (for medications) Knowledge Base Article.

2. When you continue or continue but change, be sure to fill in the fields: Order/verb, Medicine, Dose, Route, and Timing. You will receive an error message if you miss one of these five fields.

Example of error message where one of the five fields was left blank:

3. Next, go to Medications and click the Enter button.

4. Be sure to fill in the fields: Medication Direction, Medicine, Dose, Route, and Timing. You will receive an error message if you miss one of these five fields. When finished, click Done, compile your note, and electronically sign it from the Finished Note preview screen.

5. Once all of the information has been added for the Complete Assessment, click Compile this Note button to save the note and push the medications to the MAR.

Prescriber Progress Notes

1. Within the Prescriber Progress Note from the PN part 2 tab go to Medications by clicking the Enter button.

2. Be sure to fill in the fields: Medication Direction, Medicine, Dose, Route, and Timing. You will receive an error message if you miss one of these five fields. You can also include additional optional fields such as # to dispense, X Days, Start Date, and a Comment/Reason.

Example of error message where one of the five fields was left blank:

If you need to change (decrease/increase) or stop a medication, always update (from a new note) the verb and then adjust the dose, route, and/or time as needed. Be sure all five fields are filled in as blanks are not allowed.

If the desired value is not in the medication list, you can free-text an entry to the corresponding dosage. Never leave one of the five fields (Medication Direction, Medicine, Dose, Route, and Timing) blank. For more information on how to edit the medication and dose for your group and future use, see our Editing Drug List Knowledge Base Article.

3. Once all of the information has been added for the Progress Note, click Compile this Note button to save the note and push the medications to the MAR. It's a good idea to electronically sign the note from the Finished Note screen, if you have an electronic signature.
